Celebrating a Delicious National Cake Day

Care home resident baking cupcakes

Staff and residents here at Glencorse Care Home in Penicuik rolled up our sleeves and had a fabulous time celebrating National Cake Day! Some residents were in their element; Pearl, showed everyone how to mix up the batter and Nettie told stories about what she used to bake at home. Deputy manager, Carolyn, paid close attention to learn the secrets behind making the perfect cake, and soon the sweet smell of fresh bakes filled the home.

Once the cakes were mixed and in their tins, our talented chef, Rab, popped them into the oven while our bakers waited in anticipation to decorate their masterpieces. Each cake was decorated using a variety of bright colours, putting our fine motor skills and creative flair to the test. The atmosphere was full of laughter, chatter and a real sense of teamwork as everyone contributed to the delicious results.

Of course, our favourite part was enjoying the fruits of our labour! Paired with a cup of tea, our cakes were savoured with smiles all round, making it a truly sweet and memorable celebration.

Activities like this aren't just delicious, they're hugely beneficial for our residents. Concentrating on each step of the recipe boosts cognitive function and coordination. Plus, decorating each unique cake encourages creativity and self-expression. Working together towards a worthwhile goal boosts self-confidence, promotes social connection, sparks memories and offers the opportunity to tell stories and reminisce.

There's always fun activities and events happening at Glenrose Care Home. If you'd like to learn more about our varied activities calendar, please get in touch with our team. We'd love to hear from you.
