Combining Nature and Nurture at Glencorse Care Home

As spring approaches, residents and staff at Glencorse Care Home have been turning their attention towards our wonderful outdoor spaces. We are looking forward to putting our residents’ own unique touch into our garden, creating an environment that is not only visually beautiful, but also engages all the senses.
Over the last few weeks, residents and staff have come together to plant seeds and bulbs. It has been a lovely activity that has brought both joy and anticipation, and we are all looking forward to seeing the garden come to life in the months ahead. The changes we have seen so far have brought a satisfying sense of purpose and achievement for our residents and we can’t wait to make the most of the beautiful colours and scents this summer.

Our aim is to develop a space where residents can relax, connect with nature, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors. We’re proud that our garden is accessible and enjoyable for all our residents to enjoy, with flat, wheelchair-friendly paths, raised flower beds and a secure perimeter, allowing residents to stay independent and explore the garden safely. Plant pots and seeds were brought inside, allowing every resident to get involved, regardless of their abilities.
It’s important to us that our residents have had their say in these exciting decisions, and are helping to shape how the garden will look and feel in the coming months. Putting personal touches on our environment is one way we help our residents feel completely at home, giving them a true sense of belonging. These activities have also brought residents together through a shared experience and goal, and we have been taking this opportunity to reminisce about past experiences in nature, such as treasured walks with loved ones and family garden parties.

As well as planting flowers and bulbs, we have also been thinking about the wildlife around us and how we can make the garden a welcoming space for birds, butterflies and other small creatures. One of our recent activities involved making homemade bird feeders, which was both enjoyable and purposeful.
We look forward to sharing updates as the garden begins to grow and develop; to stay up to date, please give us a follow on social media.
