Sensory Gardens

The sensory garden at Glencorse Care Home has been thoughtfully designed to offer residents a peaceful, stimulating, and accessible outdoor space. Every element, from fragrant flowers to textured pathways, is chosen to engage the senses, support wellbeing, and encourage gentle exploration. Residents can enjoy a safe environment where they can relax, socialise, or take part in small activities while benefiting from fresh air and natural surroundings.

This tranquil garden is especially beneficial for residents living with dementia or reduced mobility, providing a space that is both calming and interactive, allowing each individual to connect with nature at their own pace.

Engaging the Senses

The sensory garden features a variety of plants, shrubs, and flowers selected for their scent, colour, and texture, creating opportunities for residents to explore and enjoy nature safely. Raised flower beds and accessible paths ensure everyone can participate, whether walking, using a wheelchair, or sitting to enjoy the sights and smells.

Residents can also experience gentle activities such as bird watching, gardening sessions, or water features that stimulate the senses while promoting relaxation and a sense of achievement. Regular garden activities help enhance mental alertness, improve mood, and foster a sense of calm.

Sensory Garden FAQs

We believe that providing our residents with the chance to get outside regularly, take in the fresh air, engage in outdoor activities, and enjoy the natural world is extremely important for overall well-being. Being outdoors has many mental and physical benefit,s such as lowering stress and anxiety, improving overall mood, supporting cognitive function, and improving cardiovascular health, balance, and muscle strength.

In order to make our gardens accessible to all, we have included wheelchair-accessible paths and seated furniture for those who experience issues with mobility. Our private garden is also safe and secure with proper fencing and gates, to prevent residents from going beyond the garden walls. Our walking routes are well-maintained and there is also lighting and other safety features to help prevent falls or other accidents.

We hold many of our activities outdoors, including walking, gardening, lawn games, and chair exercises, and when the weather permits, residents can dine with family and friends, get involved in outdoor arts & crafts, and enjoy live entertainment.
