Growing Through Grief: Bill’s Story at Glencorse Care Home

Before moving into Glencorse Care Home, Bill had been caring for his wife, Moira, at home. When Bill suffered a fall and broke his leg, he was admitted to hospital and, while he recovered, Moira was cared for in a care home close to where they lived.
Once Bill’s health improved, both he and Moira made the decision to move into Glencorse Care Home together in March this year. They moved into one of our double bedrooms, where they could both be cared for by experts while staying close together. For Bill, this brought a deep sense of relief; he was able to step back from the pressure and responsibility of caring for Moira and simply be her husband again. It gave them the chance to spend quality time together, to relax and to enjoy each other’s company with the reassurance of help being on hand 24/7. Having always been a keen gardener, the outdoor spaces at Glencorse took Bill’s interest immediately. Although the newly laid gardens were still in the early stages of growth and establishment, they provided something both familiar and full of potential in their new home.
Sadly, Moira became ill and passed away, leaving Bill heartbroken. Moira was incredibly important to Bill; she was his world.
At Glencorse, our team understand the complexities of caring for someone who has recently lost a partner. Grief can feel incredibly isolating and we recognised how crucial it was to support Bill gently and consistently through this difficult time.
Redirecting Grief
Our team prioritised what mattered most to Bill: his journey, his identity and the life he had shared with Moira. We wanted to help him find a positive outlet where he could channel both his love for Moira and his grief after her passing. Despite the gardens being newly planted and not yet fully established, the "Glenforce" group was created to transform it into an intergenerational five senses garden. Considering Bill’s love of gardening, our team felt there was no better person to become head gardener.
However, still grieving for Moira, Bill initially felt the role was too much for him to take on. Rather than rush him, our team gave him time and space.
Instead, Bill focused his energy and time on creating a dedicated rose garden in memory of Moira. An area of the garden was quickly identified where he could plant and tend roses for his beloved wife. He cared for the roses daily, and in doing so, found comfort, purpose and a calming way to keep Moira close. Bill set the pace, with the Glencorse team gently supporting him as he gradually re-engaged with a pastime he had always loved.

Finding Purpose Again
A trip to the garden centre proved pivotal in reigniting Bill’s interest in gardening. Choosing the flowers that would be the best tribute to Moira gave Bill a reason to engage with the hobby he loved, while honouring the happy memories he shared with his wife.
Today, Bill loves looking at magazines to choose flowers, and our team take him to the garden centre to buy them. We have also bought him new and improved gardening tools to help him feel included and valued throughout the process.
Bill is living with dementia, and he finds comfort in the freedom of movement around our home. At Glencorse, he can come and go from the garden as he pleases, socialise when he feels the time is right and take a quiet moment of reflection whenever needed.

Remembering Moira
Bill keeps the order of service from Moira’s funeral with him, along with a photo of her and the roses she would have loved. He often reminisces about her beautiful smile. Every day, he tends to the garden with love and tenderness, keeping Moira’s memory close in a place that is personal, peaceful and full of meaning.
Gardening has helped redirect Bill’s grief and has given him comfort, purpose and a positive focus following his loss. The Glencorse team continue to give Bill the exact combination of space and gentle encouragement he needs to move forward, while remembering his beloved wife. Thanks to this patience and compassion, Bill now feels ready to take a leading role in transforming the Glencorse garden into a space that everyone can enjoy and appreciate.
A plaque will be placed in the flower garden in memory of Moira, creating a lasting tribute to her and to the love she and Bill shared.
